Today the Governor, in the State of Michigan, announced that the filing date of April 15, 2020 for all 2019 State related income tax returns and tax payments be extended consistent with Federal guidelines to July 15, 2020.
This legislation is intended to ease the affects of the coronavirus crisis felt throughout communities and to assist in keeping with the ‘stay at home’ order issued earlier in the week.
The State of Michigan has been processing City of Detroit returns for several years. The legislation specifically includes all City of Detroit returns and payments for such returns to be included in the extension to July 15, 2020.
All taxpayers are encouraged to file returns soon, however. If you are entitled to a refund, electronic filing by your tax preparer results in a timely deposit of your refund to your bank account. If you have an amount due, knowing in advance gives you time to plan for the July 15, 2020 payment date. You can file your return today and submit your payment by the due date.
